Gonzales Lied to Congress, Knowingly

It is nice to know that the top law officer in America, the one that we trust to enforce the law is a compulsive , and knowingly liked to congress.

From Reuters

Embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto faced a new firestorm on Tuesday sparked by a report he may have misled lawmakers in 2005 about civil liberty violations by the FBI.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick , a Vermont Democrat, responded by promising that Gonzales would face tough questions about this and other matters at a hearing planned by his panel later this month.

And Rep. Jerrold , a New York Democrat who chairs a House Judiciary subcommittee, renewed calls for Gonzales to resign and called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to determine if he had misled Congress, “a serious crime.”

But President George W. brushed off the flap about his longtime friend, who earlier served as White House counsel.

“The president has said repeatedly that he has great faith in the attorney general, and that has not changed,” said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Gonzales assured Congress in 2005 that the FBI had not abused powers granted under the anti-terror USA Patriot Act despite having received reports of potential violations.

Friday News Dump: More Executive Privilege from the White House.

Writing by Marq on Sunday, 8 of July , 2007 at 12:54 am

The White House is going to stop another person who has been order to testify before the from doing so. In another case of “executive privilege.” uber-hack for Bush has been order to testify, but her lawyer responded to the chairman of the committee, , was told,

Ms. Taylor expects to receive a letter from [White House Counsel Fred] Fielding on behalf of the President directing her not to comply with the Senate’s subpoena. These contrary directions undoubtedly create a monumental clash between the executive and legislative branches of government. This clash may ultimately be resolved by the judicial branch.…

[Taylor] is unquestionably loyal to and committed to the President and his agenda. …

As you can see, according to her lawyer, she is a hack if ever there was one. Furthermore, it shows that the White House wants to fight. To credit his response was…

The White House continues to try to have it both ways — to block Congress from talking with witnesses and accessing documents and other evidence while saying nothing improper occurred. I hope the White House stops this stonewalling and accepts my offer to negotiate a workable solution to the Committee’s oversight requests, as so many previous White Houses have.

ThinkProgress has more.

White House Going to Tell Congress to Piss-off

Writing by Marq on Thursday, 15 of March , 2007 at 2:09 pm

The stand-off will soon begin between the White House and Congress. The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy said he wants answers in the political firing of US attorneys, and he does not care what the White House thinks about the soon to be issues subpoenas to haul Karl Rove, the failed Justice Harriet Miers, and the more.

Now I do not think it takes a political genius to see that the White House is going to try to tell Congress to shove it all up their asses, and use some corny “Executive Privilege” crap. The real battle is not the response from the White House, but what Congresses response is to the White House’s Screw you… Sadly, given the boneless nature of the Democrats, I bet they do nothing, If you ask me, Impeach Bush’s sorry ass.

Now ThinkProgress already has posted that the White House plans to fight. Go for it George, American needs yet another reason to kick your ass out. I bet the Republicans are kicking themselfs for all the precedence setting crap they did to Clinton.

They write…

During a press briefing yesterday, presidential counselor Dan Bartlett signaled that the White House will fight congressional efforts to have Karl Rove testify about his role in the U.S. Attorney purge.

I find it highly unlikely that a member of the White House staff would testify publicly to these matters, but that doesn’t mean we won’t find other ways to try to share that information.

Press Secretary Tony Snow was also resistant:

Well, as you know, Ed, it has been traditional in all White Houses not to have staffers testify on Capitol Hill. So I think what we have been trying to do is to work in a way to be as forthcoming with members of Congress — you saw all the emails coming out today — give them all the information so that they can make a fair judgment about it.
